Every piece is an experiment, a vehicle for my expression. Joy, humor, anxiety, bewilderment - everything I have goes into it. I use a variety of techniques: collage, fabrics, bondo®, resins, paint. They allow for my “by any means necessary” process.
Lately I’ve been disassembling my old sketch pads and notebooks. They are an extremely disorganized mess. Imagine the notes of a hapless and inept gumshoe detective trying to solve 10 complex cases at the same time, all while studying poetry in night school. My partner euphemistically refers to this mess as “The Genius Files”. But really, the only impressive thing about them is how many decades I’ve been working the case. There are some repeating themes. For example: A stubborn (and unsupported) belief that the world could be less brutal, stupid, and unjust. There are a lot of lists and hierarchies. There are quotes and passages of merit. There is the painfully simplistic, dogmatic, and pedantic spewage of a younger me. There are sincere and desperately comic plans to change the world, and myself. There are designs and hopes to make beautiful things. I still have those hopes.
This work is about the releasing of rigid precepts and embracing what I have always loved - painting. I will continue to investigate the matter with my whole heart, knowing that it cannot be solved, but perhaps we can all explore the evidence.
